This month, a mother in CJCJ’s Cameo House program finds success in her collaboration with Cameo House staff to help her son overcome challenges in order to thrive.
CJCJ’s Cameo House program is an innovative alternative sentencing program that works to provide community-based services for homeless women and their children in a residential setting.
In partnership with support staff, a dedicated mother made the decision to reflect on her son’s emotional and behavioral difficulties and took constructive steps to overcome them. She courageously faced the challenge of admitting her own faults in the past and, after countless hours of appointments and outreach to different resources, learned that her son had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This new information provided a meaningful step forward to begin addressing her son’s needs.
According to Cameo House case manager, Maura Quinn, he is now a “well-mannered, considerate, nice kid and it gives us hope that he will be alright.” Maura and the entire Cameo House staff support mother and child relationships like this one, through events and activities including community festivals, birthday parties and much more. In the coming months, the program plans to continue these efforts through opportunities that focus on positive interactions between mothers and their children to strengthen families.

Last week, Cameo House hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for mothers and children in the program. This holiday tradition, along with the Christmas dinner hosted by Cameo House, began five years ago with the support of Bridget Stewart, Cameo House Senior Residential Support Supervisor, as a way to build community and lift spirits. Alongside Cameo House staff and participants, Bridget spends hours decorating the kitchen with flowers and festive decorations, as well as cooking a homemade meal. Cameo House staff maintain this tradition to help ease the challenges that many participating families face during the holidays. It is a way to appreciate and care for the women and children at the start of the holiday season.“We all got together as a family and the residents helped. You could just see light in them. It’s just a happy time for them, a happy place,” Bridget said. These Cameo House holiday gatherings are part of the program’s larger focus to provide a support of network and foster a strong sense of community throughout the year. In addition to this tradition, Cameo House works to put on an event for each major holiday throughout the year to provide continued support and a sense of community. GET INVOLVED:
